Ballistic Transport in Nanostructures from First-Principles Simulations

چکیده

We developed and implemented a first-principles based theory of the Landauer ballistic conductance, to determine the transport properties of nanostructures and molecularelectronics devices. Our approach starts from a quantummechanical description of the electronic structure of the system under consideration, performed at the density-functional theory level and using finite-temperature molecular dynamics simulations to obtain an ensemble of the most likely microscopic configurations. The extended Bloch states are then converted into maximally-localized Wannier functions to allow us to construct the Green’s function of the conductor, from which we obtain the density of states (confirming the reliability of our microscopic calculations) and the Landauer conductance. A first application is presented to the case of carbon nanotubes.

Slip Boundary Conditions in Ballistic–Diffusive Heat Transport in Nanostructures

Ballistic–diffusive heat conduction, which is predominantly affected by boundaries and interfaces, will occur in nanostructures whose characteristic lengths are comparable to the phonon mean free path (MFP). Here, we demonstrated that interactions between phonons and boundaries (or interfaces) could lead to two kinds of slip boundary conditions in the ballistic– diffusive regime: boundary tempe...

First - Principles Study on Electron Transport Property through Nanostructures

Within the last several years, a large number of experiments concerning metallic wire contacts have been carried out using a scanning tunneling microscope and a mechanically controllable break junction. Recently, the unique phenomena of ballistic electron transport through nanoscale junctions such as quantized conductance have been observed experimentally and theoretically. In this situation, f...

Heat guiding and focusing using ballistic phonon transport in phononic nanostructures

Unlike classical heat diffusion at macroscale, nanoscale heat conduction can occur without energy dissipation because phonons can ballistically travel in straight lines for hundreds of nanometres. Nevertheless, despite recent experimental evidence of such ballistic phonon transport, control over its directionality, and thus its practical use, remains a challenge, as the directions of individual...

Quantum Interference Control of Ballistic Magneto- resistance in a Magnetic Nanowire Containing Two Atomic- Size Domain Walls

The magnetoresistance of a one-dimensional electron gas in a metallic ferromagnetic nanowire containing two atomic-size domain walls has been investigated in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. The magnetoresistance is calculated in the ballistic regime, within the Landauer-Büttiker formalism. It has been demonstrated that the conductance of a magnetic nanowire with double domain walls...

Quasi-ballistic thermal transport from nanoscale interfaces observed using ultrafast coherent soft X-ray beams.

Fourier theory of thermal transport considers heat transport as a diffusive process where energy flow is driven by a temperature gradient. However, this is not valid at length scales smaller than the mean free path for the energy carriers in a material, which can be hundreds of nanometres in crystalline materials at room temperature. In this case, heat flow will become 'ballistic'--driven by di...
